Scout Association's Adult Training Scheme
Introduction
The Scout Association’s primary purpose is the development of young people, it also seeks to offer personal development opportunities to adults, both within their Scouting role and as individuals. The Adult Training Scheme is one means by which adults in Scouting can be supported in their chosen role. It is also a means by which personal development needs can be met.
About the Adult Training Scheme
Appointment Process
Once an adult has been recruited, the first stage of Appointment is to agree a job description with their Group Scout Leader or Commissioner. This should state who they are working with, what they are required to do, how long for and what support is available to them.
Necessary forms
All individuals new to Scouting or returning after a break need to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) form together with an Appointment form (AA)
Once the CRB form has been received by HQ, the Appointments sub-Committee Secretary informs the County Training Manager that the new adult needs to start the Adult Training Scheme. At this stage a Provisional Appointment is made. The adult is now ready to begin "pre-Appointment training" – called Getting Started.
Getting Started
Module 1 – Essential Information
Gives an insight into what Scouting is all about, who’s who, why we do what we do, safety etc
Module 3 (Section Leaders) – Tools for the Job
Games, programme ideas, ceremonies.
The Appointment Process
Need for the new adult to meet with the District Appointments Committee.
Module 2 - Personal Learning Plan
This will be done with the new adult and their TA. This is an agreed record of planned learning for a specified role. The plan is used to identify which of the modules in the Module Matrix is relevant to their role, based on their job description. The Module Matrix can be found in the Adults Personal File which will be issued to the learner by their TA. The information in this workbook will help the learner and TA establish which modules they will require training for and whether or not prior learning can be taken into account.
Warrant Issued
Once Getting Started has been completed, the new learner has been before their Warrants Committee and the full Criminal Record Bureau check has been returned satisfactorily, the Warrant can be applied for. All adults accepting a Warrant are, within a period of up to three years, obliged to show that they have the defined skills for the role. In doing so they can be awarded a Wood Badge. To help individuals through the process of gaining a Wood Badge, they will be allocated a Training Adviser (TA). Their TA will work with them to match their existing skills with those of their new role, to identify skills gaps, agree a plan for gaining the required skills and for confirming that those skills have been successfully gained.
Validation
This is the means by which an individual’s ability to use a skill in practice is confirmed. All modules required for a particular appointment must be validated regardless of whether the skills have been gained by previous experience or by planned learning.
The Wood Badge
The recommendation for award of the Wood Badge may only be made once satisfactory validation of all modules in the Personal Learning Plan have been completed. The responsibility for recommending the award of the Wood Badge rests with the County Training Manager.
On-going Learning
Following completion of the Wood Badge, all warranted adults must undertake an average of at least five hours on-going learning each year, calculated over the period of the warrant.
On-going learning may take a number of forms. Any training, learning or development completed by the adult that is subsequently incorporated into their Scouting role is deemed appropriate. The renewal of a current adult's First Aid qualification/First Response certificate, could be included as part of the on-going learning requirement. Modules being run in the County could also form part of the on-going learning if the Wood Badge holder wanted to attend and update themselves on that particular subject.
Supporting new leaders
Would you have some time to spare in your busy life to be a Training Adviser (TA) to a new adult in Scouting? This is a really important role to help our new adults feel confident in their new role. Helping them learn what they need to do, who they can get answers to questions from and most importantly – stop throwing them in "at the deep end"!
If you think you could spare some time for this very rewarding role, please contact the Local Training Manager (LTM) with responsibility for TAs (Wayne Faulkner) for more information

Module 16 – Nights Away – also includes Modules 17 and 18
If you wish to attend the Module 16 weekend, you must also be able to attend the planning session two months before. Once your application form and cheque have been received by the CTM, it will be expected that you are turning up for the planning session too.
Please send your application form and cheque for £25.00 (made payable to Shropshire Scouts (Leader Training Account) to the County Training Manger by the closing date. Please note that £5.00 of this cost is a non-refundable charge for administration.
If for some reason you are not able to attend the residential weekend, the Course Director must be informed at least 5 days before the weekend so that you qualify for a £20.00 refund. If less than 5 days notice is given, there will be no refund, as costs will already have been incurred.
Should the numbers applying for this module not be enough to run the weekend, it will be cancelled and your cheque will be returned.
If I can be of any further help please do not hesitate to contact me.
